PocketPC Installer Professional - What is it ?

If you've ever used a program to create Zip files, then you'll feel right at home using the PocketPC Installer Professional.

Simply tell it which .cab files you want to install onto your device, add any other files that you just want to copy into directories on the device, and it'll build the installer files for you.

What you don't see is that behind the scenes, a lot of cool stuff is going on.

If you choose to put the PDA installer .exe on a memory card as an "autorun.exe" on your device, excellent, it's a fantastic way to distribute your software. However, some devices will incorrectly run this autorun.exe whenever the device comes out of "idle" mode, such as when you first turn it on each morning.

Generally, you don't want an installer to start re-installing everything whenever you first turn on your PDA. The PocketPC Installer Professional has an option to get around this problem.

You can also ask it to soft-reset your device after installing it's files, and you can choose to create installer files containing just .cab/other files for a particular set of devices. So, you could choose to have a PDA installer on your website just for Windows Mobile 5 devices - this would make sure your installer file doesn't include any non-WM2005 files.
