Pocket PC Installer Professional - v3.4678
August 9, 2009

We are pleased to announce a new update to our popular Pocket PC Installer Professional software.
Our thanks to all of our users who've taken the time to give us feedback.

New features

1. New "Install .tsk file" option for your PocketPC Theme files

We now give you the option to install PocketPC theme files (.tsk files) on your device. Simply drag'n'drop your .tsk file into PocketPC Installer Professional. and select the relevant option.

2. New "Install .cab file if newer" option

PocketPC .cab files have one big problem: there simply isn't any useful "Version" information in them at all.

Don't believe us ?

Try installing, say, the Microsoft SQLCE .cab file onto your device.
Then install it again.

It makes absolutely no attempt to warn you that you've already got this version of SQLCE installed on device, and just asks if you want to remove the installed version and (re-) install the .cab again.

With PocketPC Installer Professional, you can now ask for a .cab file to be installed onto a device if it's a newer version (based on the .cab file's date/time) than the version that a PocketPC Installer Professional installer has previously installed onto your device.

Note: This is not standard .cab installing functionality, and there are side-effects to know about, before using this functionality.

3. "Device hanging" problem with some .cab files

Arguably our most difficult fix in this update. There are two descriptions about this new feature.

The simple version: on some devices, perfectly valid code to install a .cab file using the Microsoft libraries would "hang" a device, and leave it needing a soft-reset (or forceably killing the wceload.exe process) to continue. This issue has now been solved.

The technical version: grab a strong cup of coffee, then click here.

4. Silent installing on Windows Mobile 6 devices

Issue fixed with installing .cab files on WM6 devices, without any prompts appearing.

As before, we use the standard Microsoft wceload.exe program to install .cab files, and still cannot guarantee that all of your .cab files will be able to be installed silently. (As before, if your installer file can't install a .cab file silently, it'll try to install it again without the "silent" feature turned on.)

5. Updated Help file

We've updated the help file, describing all of the new options.
